In December 2012, our winery was the victim of vandalism: the valves of 10 barrels of wine destined to become Brunello di Montalcino were opened. Of the 6 vintages affected (2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012), the worst-hit was the 2010, with only 450 litres remaining. My family and I wanted the 2010 vintage to be associated with an important message, so that this sad and painful episode would lead to words and gestures of hope and help towards those less fortunate than us. To this aim, the 450 litres were bottled exclusively in formats of 3, 5, 6, 9, 12 and 15 litres in order to organize charity auctions for associations that support medical research and, in particular, the treatment of childhood diseases and education for disadvantaged young people. This is the means we chose to convey a message close to our heart: only in this way will the 450 litres salvaged from the 2010 vintage be worth more than what we lost.Gianfranco Soldera
